New study says: people who have tendency to forget things are exceptionally intelligent
|
Do you often forget people's names? Or maybe you go to the store and forget what you wanted to buy? Or do you just find yourself forgetting things?
If that happens to you a lot and you're worried that something might be wrong, don’t stress. It doesn’t mean anything is wrong; in fact, it might be the opposite!
Researchers have published a new study showing that people who forget things are actually smarter than their friends who remember everything.
The University of Toronto in Canada found that intelligence isn't linked to how well people remember things.
Usually, we think that those who can remember everything—from simple math to family birthdays—are smarter, but "forgetters" have their own efficient skills.
It turns out that sometimes seeing the bigger picture is better for your brain and even for your safety than remembering all the little details.
In fact, the part of the brain that keeps memories also layers important memories over older and less relevant ones.
According to CNN, remembering every little detail isn’t what makes us smarter.
It’s more effective to keep important memories at the forefront and forget the rest.
This can be illustrated by how someone might remember a person’s face but forget their name.
Sure, it can be embarrassing, but if you look at it differently, it might actually be a good thing.
Imagine you’re a lion in the savannah, needing to pay attention to everything to survive. Knowing what’s a threat is way more important than remembering the names of everything around you.
But the intelligence of a "forgetting" brain doesn’t stop there. It also helps us sort through old memories that we may not need anymore, making space for new and important ones.
While it’s ideal to remember every detail and also see the bigger picture, fewer people seem to be able to do that these days.
When you can look up almost any answer with just one click, there’s really no need to remember all the names of past US presidents, for example.
But the study doesn’t say you should keep forgetting things all the time. So if you forget to buy milk, just remember that it’s your brain doing its job.
So if you forget what you read, hey, you might actually be smarter than others!
