When celebrating your anniversary with your girlfriend or boyfriend, it's customary to give the person you love a gift.

So when Terry celebrated with his girlfriend Anna, he decided to make her a necklace.

Anna was happy to receive the beautiful gift. She wore it every day and everywhere and hardly took it off.

But what she didn't know was that inside the necklace was a very big secret.

Although he had never carved wood, Terry managed to make the beautiful necklace from seashells and a special pine tree that is very common in Tasmania.

It was a unique and thoughtful gift, as well as very creative – but there was so much more to this necklace.

The secret meaning of the necklace wasn’t revealed until Anna had been wearing it for a year and a half.

“I’ve always loved the idea of giving someone a gift and only years later realizing the true value of the gift”, Terry said.

Terry thought long and hard about the perfect moment to reveal his secret.

He decided to do it at Smo Cave in northern Scotland, a place the couple had wanted to visit since they met.

Once they were in the cave, a year and a half after Terry gave Anna the unique gift, he asked her for the necklace so he could take a picture of her on the rocks.

Then, when Anna wasn’t looking, he opened the necklace with a knife to reach a secret compartment he had built beforehand.

So Terry turned on the camera, and knelt down.

He opened the necklace - and took out an engagement ring that had been inside the necklace the whole time.

“She stood there stunned for a moment, trying to figure out what was happening, and then the token fell and she said ‘yes’ with all the excitement in the world!”, Terry said.

Without her knowing it, Anna had been wearing her engagement ring for a year and a half!

Well, maybe Terry didn’t think it through perfectly, because Anna was quick to tell him that anything could have gone wrong.

“Wait.. was the ring in there the whole time?”, she said. “I could have lost it, you funny guy!”, she said, according to Terry, who of course didn’t regret it at all.
