Few things in life are as important as the safety and security of ourselves and our loved ones. It's a given that most of us want to avoid danger as much as possible, especially in our own homes.

Throughout time, a home, whether big or small, old or new, has provided us with an added sense of security. That’s why it's so frightening to fall victim to a break-in. The mere thought of a stranger entering your house, free to rummage, touch, or take whatever they please, sends shivers down my spine.

I'm sure I'm not alone in this feeling, which is why I thought it was a good idea to share an important warning about a tactic criminals are using to get into the homes of unsuspecting people.

Home security is usually something people take seriously. Some rely on dogs as both a warning and a defense system. Others install security cameras outside their homes, hoping to deter potential criminals or record them if they aren't deterred. However, as has been the case throughout history, criminals are always trying to stay one step ahead of the preventative methods designed to stop them.

WARNING!!! Two weeks ago, in the middle of the day, I heard a loud knock on my front door—not a normal knock, but almost a pounding...

A woman from Texas, Kim Fleming Czernigiliare, learned this the hard way a few years ago when she found herself at the center of a supposed break-in attempt at her home. Following the frightening experience—which occurred in 2016—Kim posted on Facebook, recounting what happened and sharing a chilling warning that people would be wise to remember.

"About two weeks ago," her post began, "in the middle of the day, there was a loud knock on my front door. Not a normal knock but almost a pounding (I honestly thought maybe something was wrong with someone and they needed help), but something didn't feel right... and I don't answer my door when I'm home alone. So don't bother!"

"After a few knocks, they finally left. I peeked out and could see it was a male through the stained glass in my door. After about 30 minutes, I went outside to look for what I thought would be a pamphlet or a flyer, but instead found a rubber band wrapped around my doorknob to hold the door unlocked when I unlatched it. I called Ron and he told me to get my gun and leave it out."

Surprisingly, Kim had reportedly almost fallen victim to a technique used by criminals to break into people's homes.

Kim's post went on to reveal that she contacted the local sheriff, who informed her that this was quickly becoming a common occurrence in the area. She continued: "As soon as you unlatch it, they don't have to wait for you to turn the knob—they can just push right in. Anyway, just be careful out there, I used to be a very trusting person, but not anymore!"
