According to experts, there is one very common phrase that women often say in the bedroom that can actually be a turn-off for some men. When it comes to intimacy, everyone has different preferences, and what works for one person may not work at all for another. That is why open and honest communication is essential for building a healthy and satisfying sex life.

Experts say that a seemingly encouraging phrase can sometimes have unintended effects. While many people view it as playful or motivating, it may create pressure rather than confidence for certain partners.

According to sex educator Gigi Engle and psychotherapist Alec Williams, the three-word phrase "Don't stop, harder" is one that many men have heard at some point. While it is often intended as positive feedback, they argue that it can sometimes trigger self-doubt and performance anxiety instead of enhancing the experience.

Rather than being interpreted as praise or encouragement, the phrase may create a sense of pressure—not necessarily because of the words themselves, but because of how they can be understood by the person hearing them.

"The problem is the assumption that hearing this is always 'hot,'" Engle explained. "For some men, it can make them feel like they can't finish too quickly or they'll be seen as a failure. Or they may try as hard as they can and still feel, 'Okay, I'm probably not good enough,' which can create significant performance pressure."

"It Can Affect How Their Body Responds"

Williams explained how these kinds of thoughts can influence a man's mindset during intimacy.

"For many men, it can become a self-perpetuating cycle," he said. "They become so focused on performing and 'getting it right' that they get stuck in their own thoughts. Naturally, this can affect how their body responds, sometimes leading to difficulty maintaining an erection or reaching orgasm, which can create even more pressure for future encounters."

Engle pointed out another important consideration:

"If someone is already close to ejaculation and hears 'Don't stop, harder,' they may finish immediately, which can sometimes trigger feelings of embarrassment or shame afterward."

More Intense Isn't Always Better

Pushing yourself to be more forceful or energetic than feels natural is rarely a good idea. Intimacy should be comfortable and enjoyable for everyone involved. Overexertion can sometimes create problems and make the experience less enjoyable.

"If you're moving harder or more vigorously than you'd like, it can be exhausting," Engle explained. "Fatigue may cause your erection to fade or delay ejaculation. It can also work in the opposite direction, leading to premature ejaculation because of overstimulation."

Communication Matters

Both Engle and Williams emphasize that, in many cases, the word "harder" does not necessarily mean "faster"—a misunderstanding that can create even more pressure.

"First of all, harder doesn't always mean faster," Engle said. "It may refer to deeper penetration that is actually quite slow. It doesn't automatically mean aggressive, jackhammer-style thrusting, and most people don't enjoy that anyway. If partners provide context about what they mean, it can go a long way toward reducing pressure."

As with most aspects of sex and intimacy, communication is key.

"Having an open conversation with your partner about how you both feel during sex, and what would help each of you feel more secure and connected, can be incredibly beneficial," Williams said.

The Bottom Line

The phrase "Don't stop, harder" is not inherently negative, and many couples use it without any issues. However, experts suggest that clear communication about desires, expectations, and comfort levels can help prevent misunderstandings and reduce performance pressure. What is intended as encouragement may not always be received that way, making honest dialogue one of the most valuable tools for creating a positive and satisfying intimate experience.
