A grieving mother, Sadie Myers, has shared a harrowing warning after her twin daughters died in an unimaginable tragedy at the family’s home in 2023.

In a deeply emotional post on social media, Myers spoke about the hidden dangers of an everyday household item. She and her husband, Don Starr, had purchased a large wooden toy chest—never imagining the heartbreak it would one day cause.

Sadie explained that she had been at work while her husband put their children to bed. When she returned, she checked on her little ones herself before dinner and again before going to sleep.

At some point during the night, Sadie believes the twins, Kellan and Aurora, woke up—perhaps to play.

“On Friday evening, the strange spot they decided to cuddle up in and fall back asleep was inside our cedar toy chest, where we kept all their dolls,” Sadie wrote. “They took out most of the dolls, leaving just a few inside to make it cozy, then laid down together—head to toe—with one arm over the other. I imagine they said, ‘Goodnight, Kel-Kel’ and ‘Goodnight, Sissy’…”

But then tragedy struck.

“At some point while they slept, one of them must have shifted or kicked in a dream, and that caused the heavy cedar lid to close,” she explained.

Sadie went on to reveal a little-known danger:

“Something I didn’t know—and I’m sure many others don’t—is that most wooden toy chests, once closed, are airtight and soundproof. So as they slept, hugging each other, the oxygen slowly ran out over several hours. They passed away without ever knowing it was happening. There wasn’t a sudden gasp, just a slow transition from sleep to death.”

On Saturday morning, when the family awoke, the twins were missing from their beds. It was one of their siblings who eventually found them inside the chest.

“‘Mom, I found them!’ he said. ‘They’re so silly, just sleeping in the toy box.’”

Sadie recalled rushing to check—and instantly realizing something was terribly wrong.

“Within seconds, I knew. And I knew it was already too late… I will never understand this, not now, not ever. My only hope is that sharing this might save someone else. If you have a wooden toy chest like ours—destroy it immediately!!!”

Her husband, Don, shared his grief later, saying he had been holding back, wishing it was only a nightmare.

“I guess I was waiting to make sure it wasn’t just a long, horrible dream. But since every day is harder, and it’s public now, here it is: my beautiful family has been devastated by tragedy—the loss of our beautiful, perfect twins,” he wrote.

He asked for support for Sadie, their older children, and the rest of their extended family:

“Please send all the love, strength, and positive energy you can to Sadie, my amazing older kids, myself, and of course the rest of our family, who have been our rock and are loved and appreciated more than I can ever express. Hug and kiss your kids for me—even the grown ones. I love you all.”

May Kellan and Aurora rest in peace.
